HELP TOPICS

Everything first-time buyers need to know about airgun ownership in the UK. This guide is provided for informational purposes only and is intended to help you understand the legal and safety basics before purchasing.

Basic airgun safety: what rules must I always follow? +
  • Always treat an airgun as if it were loaded.
  • Never point an airgun, loaded or unloaded, in an unsafe direction.
  • Always know where the pellet will end up before pulling the trigger.
  • Never leave a loaded airgun unattended.
Airgun basics (UK): what should I know before purchasing? +

Age requirement: You must be 18 or older to buy an airgun or ammunition in the UK.

England & Wales: No licence is required for:

  • Air rifles under 12 ft-lb
  • Air pistols under 6 ft-lb

Scotland & Northern Ireland: Different rules apply. Always check your local regulations.

Do I need a licence to own a Huben airgun? +

England & Wales: No licence required for sub-12 ft-lb airguns.

Scotland: An Air Weapon Certificate (AWC) is required.

Northern Ireland: A Firearms Certificate is required.

What’s the difference between FAC and sub-12? +

Sub-12 airguns fall within UK legal limits and generally do not require a licence in England & Wales.

FAC airguns exceed these limits and require licensing and approval.

Where can I legally shoot an airgun? +
  • Only on land where you have the owner’s permission.
  • You must know and respect exact boundaries.
  • In public places, airguns must be unloaded and carried in a case, with lawful reason.
Backstops & ricochets: how can I shoot safely? +

Always use an effective backstop capable of safely stopping pellets. Avoid hard or polished surfaces, as they can cause dangerous ricochets.

You remain legally responsible for pellets even if they rebound unintentionally.

Can I use my airgun in my garden? +
  • Pellets must never leave your property.
  • You must not endanger, disturb or alarm others.
  • You are legally responsible for every shot fired.
What happens if a pellet leaves my property? +

If a pellet travels beyond land where you have permission to shoot, this may constitute a criminal offence — even if accidental.

What is trespassing and armed trespass? +

Entering private land without permission is trespassing. Doing so while carrying an airgun may be treated as armed trespass, a serious criminal offence.

Can I carry an airgun in public places? +

Airguns must be unloaded, inside a suitable case and carried only with a reasonable excuse (such as travelling to a range, land with permission, or repair).

Safe storage & transport: what are my responsibilities? +
  • Store airguns securely and out of reach of unauthorised persons.
  • Use a lockable case or cabinet whenever possible.
  • Transport airguns unloaded and properly covered.
Can airguns be used for hunting or pest control? +

Airguns may only be used for hunting or pest control where legally permitted. You must have landowner permission and comply with wildlife protection laws.

It is your responsibility to correctly identify quarry and act humanely.

Buyer legal responsibility: what do I confirm when purchasing? +
  • You are legally allowed to purchase an airgun.
  • You will comply with all applicable laws.
  • You will use, store and transport the airgun responsibly.
Where can I find official UK airgun guidance? +

If in doubt, consult official government guidance or your local police firearms licensing department. This guide does not replace legal advice.
